March of 2025 Breaks Several Wind Records
It is not unusual for the winds to pick up in the month of March. The third month of the year is generally the windiest spring month across the U.S. However, 2025 was even windier than usual with top wind gusts and the number of wind advisories setting several new records.
The official records demonstrated that nearly every major urban area east of the Rockies ranked either first or second for the highest average winds gusts in this month. For instance, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Little Rock, Kansas City, Indianapolis, and Chicago all broke their respective past average wind gust record for the month by at least 1 mph. Indianapolis came in as the windiest city, shattering its previous average wind gust record of 33.69 mph dating back to 2022 by 1.51 mph.
Other cities that experienced the windiest March on record were New York City, Dallas, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., Raleigh, Miami, Amarillo, Sioux Falls, and Minneapolis. Jackson, Corpus Christi, and Boston all notched their second windiest March on the record books. All of these records go back between 77 and 97 years ago, coinciding with when the airports were built.
Additionally, 44 wind gusts eclipsed the 75-mph mark in March.
