Tropics Still Brimming with Activity with 6 Weeks Left in Season

With an official end date of November 30, there are about six weeks left in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. Despite the end in sight, the tropics are still hopping with activity. Is Florida going to see yet another strike in the weeks ahead? Here is what meteorologists are looking at in the Atlantic basin.

Western Caribbean Remains Hotbed of Tropical Activity

There are still several potential developments across the tropics. Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are currently watching two different areas that could take on tropical characteristics in the next week. Unfortunately, one or both of these tropical weather features could creep into Florida.

The first area of concern is circulating in the western Caribbean. The large area of rain showers and thunderstorms coming together over Central America is growing due to the presence of a slowly rotating zone of low pressure known in meteorological circles as a gyre. Although it is a weak storm, the gyre may also work to produce more serious developments in the western Caribbean this week.

There is also the chance that the gyre will produce tropical activity over the eastern Pacific. This would result in activity for some portions of the Mexico coastline next week.
