Latest Update on Tropical Storm Debby
As of the late Wednesday morning update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Tropical Storm Debby was packing maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. The feature is crawling to the northeast at a speed of just 5 mph. The lack of steering breezes in this part of the Atlantic have kept the storm nearly stationary.
The stalling out of Debby is to blame for the excessive rainfall that has dropped over the Southeast in the last 48 hours. Forecasters warn that the situation is about to get worse as the storm gears up to make a second landfall in South Carolina.
The current forecast models indicate that Debby will begin to turn slowly to the north later Wednesday, sending it in for a landfall along the South Carolina coast late Wednesday or early Thursday. The storm is predicted to come on shore between Charleston and Myrtle Beach.
Debby is expected to intensify a bit more before making its second landfall. However, the center of the storm is bringing in dry air which would mitigate a great degree of strengthening.
