4 months agoIt will feel more like the middle of fall rather than the tail end of summer later this week throughout much of the western U.S. The cooldown will feel more dramatic to the communities that have endured record-breaking heat over the past few months.
How cool will it get and who will get in on this flip in the weather pattern? Read on for all of the details.
Southward Dip in Jet Stream Ushers in Cooler Weather
A dip in the jet stream stretching down through Washington, Oregon, and Northern California will be responsible for the cooler weather beginning late this week and lingering into the weekend. The mass of notably cooler air will come on the heels of a potent storm system that walloped the Pacific Northwest over the weekend, bringing severe storms to the Seattle area and beyond.
The unseasonably cool conditions will begin to make their appearance on Thursday. This cool air will eventually extend into parts of Nevada, Utah, and Idaho.
How cool will it get? Forecasters predict that highs will trend about 10 to 20 degrees below the historical norm for the end of August.
The Pacific Northwest and Northern California will experience the coolest temperatures. Highs will top out in the low 70s for highs for at least the next week in Seattle. The Emerald City will see plenty of cloud cover during this time period, making it feel even cooler.
Northern California will also experience a meaningful cooldown. Redding will fall from highs in the mid 90s to start the week to a top reading of 83 degrees on Thursday. The mercury will struggle to break past the 70-degree mark in Redding on Friday.
