The Northern Lights are getting a strong boost from solar activity. The wave came Sunday night (March 23), but its effects are continuing into Monday and Tuesday. Up to 22 states are going to be in the path of geomagnetic activity, resulting in the Northern lights appearing in skies across the Northern United States.

Geomagnetic Storms

A powerful G3-class geomagnetic storm swept across the U.S. on March 23, 2025, lighting up the skies in 21 states with vivid auroras. Triggered by a coronal mass ejection (CME) that erupted from the sun on March 21, the storm reached a Kp index of 7, producing vivid displays of the Northern Lights.

The G3 storm is expected to bleed over to result in a minor G1 storm on Monday night and a stronger G2 storm on Tuesday night. This event’s auroras extended far beyond their usual range, though they did not rival the May 10, 2024, G5 storm, the strongest in two decades, which reached as far south as Alabama and Georgia.
