The chance of severe weather will remain a threat for a large part of the country from the Plains and to the mid-Atlantic early in the week. Here is a look at what you can expect during this active weather pattern.

It has been a busy few days for forecasters in the central U.S. as a series of storms have set up from the Intermountain West and through the Plains. This unsettled weather will push to the east through the early part of the week, bringing the risk of storms to areas as far as the mid-Atlantic.

The line of storms will move out of the West and into the central part of the nation as the result of a mass of cool air boxing it out with moisture-infused air. The clash of these two competing air masses will ignite heavy rain and the chance of severe weather. Some of the highest elevations in the Rockies will even see the threat of snow.

The cooler air arrived by the end of the weekend for parts of the southern Plains. For instance, after seeing readings hit the triple digits last week, the mercury only managed to reach the mid 60s for highs on Sunday in Amarillo, Texas.

The track of this system also translated to more rain for the nation's heartland over the weekend. The repeated downpours through Tuesday will increase the risk of flooding in this zone.

How much more rain is on tap? The area from Denver across into the Ohio Valley should expect widespread rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches over this extended period of wet weather. Locally heavier pockets of rain ranging from 2 to 4 inches is possible from the southeastern corner of Colorado and up into southern Indiana.
