The NPS said on Sunday that the world-famous cherry blossom trees in and around the capital have reached the puffy white phase of the blooming process. The NPS confirmed that the trees hit stage five out of six over the past weekend, meaning that peak bloom is right around the corner.

The blossoming of these buds that line the National Mall and the Tidal Basin is happening as warmer temperatures infiltrate the mid-Atlantic. The NPS announced earlier in the month that they were predicting the peak bloom to happen by the end of the month.

Peak bloom is defined as the time when 70% of the blossoms have opened to display their brilliant peak hue. The peak bloom generally happens over the last week of March and into the first week of April. The average date of the height of the bloom is April 4. This bloom can last up to 10 days, given the right conditions, attracting thousands of locals and tourists to check out Mother Nature's spectacular show.
