Notable Weather Changes That You Can Expect Throughout the Month of June
Alexis Thornton
7 months agoThe month of June is in full swing and the typical weather impacts that come along this month are also showing up across the country. June generally brings a noticeable change in the weather for most areas of the U.S. Here are five of the most notable weather occurrences that happen during the sixth month of the year.
Official Start of Atlantic Hurricane Season
June 1 marks the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season. While the season usually gets off to a slow start, that does not mean that you should not expect to see tropical activity fire up during this time. You can expect an average of one named storm to come to life every one or two years in the month of June. About one of these storms will strengthen into a hurricane every five years.
Looking back at 2023, there were three tropical storms that formed during June. However, only one of these storms delivered significant rain and wind to a populated region. Going back to 2021, there were four tropical storms that were born during the month of June, marking the most of any time in the month since the mid 1960s when forecasters began using satellites to track storms out in the open ocean waters.
This is the time of the year when most storms form closer to the mainland U.S. This is because activity coming off the coast of Africa is rare this early in the season. Instead, the tropical features tend to form off the coast of the Southeast and in the warmer ocean waters circulating in the western Caribbean. Tropical weather events that form in June are also more known for their rain impacts rather than strong winds.
