7 hours agoThe construction of the world’s tallest abandoned skyscraper, Goldin Finance 117, is set to resume almost 10 years after work stopped, according to reports from Chinese state media. Located in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin, this 597-meter (1,959-foot) tower was originally planned to become China’s tallest skyscraper before financial troubles led to a long delay. The project is now expected to be completed in 2027.
What is Goldin Finance 117?
Standing at 117 stories, Goldin Finance 117 was designed to be a monumental feat in China’s skyline. Built with innovative “mega columns” to withstand strong winds and earthquakes, the skyscraper’s striking “walking stick” design includes a diamond-shaped atrium with a swimming pool and observation deck. The building was intended to host offices and a luxury five-star hotel on the upper floors, according to P&T Group, the architectural firm behind the design.
The Pause in Construction
However, in 2015, construction came to a standstill following the Chinese stock market crash, which caused financial difficulties for the Hong Kong-based developer Goldin Properties Holdings. As a result, the project was abandoned, and the developer eventually went into liquidation. Goldin Properties’ founder, Pan Sutong, who was once one of Hong Kong’s richest businessmen, was unable to stabilize the company’s finances.
