Despite the official arrival of spring on Thursday, winter is still hanging on across the Midwest and the Northeast. The long-range forecast is indicating that Old Man Winter will maintain its grip through the end of March. Here is a look at this chilly forecast for this part of the country.

Additional Chances on Wintry Weather for the Northern and Eastern U.S.

A continual parade of cold fronts will push through the Mississippi Valley and into the mid-Atlantic in the days ahead, resulting in colder temperatures and even the chance of snow at times. The mercury will land between 5 and 10 degrees below the historical average based on typical late March standards.

The arrival of the colder temperatures is coming at the hands of a weakening polar vortex. Meteorologists have been predicting this intrusion of frigid air for weeks. This weather pattern will also come with an elevated risk of rain and snow.

The first cold front of the weekend pushed through the Northeast on Saturday, bringing cloudier conditions and cooler temperatures. The weekend will end on a calm note across the eastern U.S. but more change is on the way.

Forecasters are predicting that the next weather maker will bring the chance of snow for the Upper Midwest, the upper portions of the Great Lakes, and southern Canada. It is not unusual for this far northern region to see snow well into the start of April. For instance, Duluth, Minnesota, typically picks up 13 inches of snow throughout the month of March.
