More Snow and High Winds on the Horizon for Northern U.S.

14 hours agoJust when you think winter is in the rearview mirror, another batch of cold air and the possibility of blizzard conditions is on tap for the week. High winds and the chance of severe storms are also in the forecast in the hours ahead for the Rockies and portions of the Plains states. Here is what you need to know heading into the new work week.
Storm Pushing in From the West Will Bring Measurable Snow to Rockies and Beyond
A storm that pushed onto the West Coast to start the week is making its way to the Rockies and Plains, bringing the threat of snow, powerful winds, and severe thunderstorms. The latest weather maker follows on the heels of a massive wave of storms that killed at least 42 people in the central and southern U.S.
The system that hit the western U.S. at the end of the weekend will push to the east on Monday, bringing heavy snow to the Sierra Nevada into early Tuesday. Travel was disrupted across Donner Pass in California with up to 3 feet of snow in the forecast before the storm winds down. This part of Interstate 80 picked up several inches of snow just a few days ago, making it difficult for road crews to keep up. A winter storm warning is in effect until 11 pm Monday for this portion of the Sierra Nevada.
High winds across this heavily traveled pass will complicate travel. Motorists should be prepared for sudden reduced visibility on the roads when the winds start whipping around. Forecasters are warning that snowfall rates could reach 2 to 3 inches per hour at times. It is always a good idea to check the road conditions and the hourly forecast before heading into the high country.
