A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday, March 28, 2025, causing widespread destruction across both countries. Three deaths have been confirmed, with thousands feared dead as buildings collapse and chaos erupts across Southeast Asia.

At Least Three Confirmed Dead in Thailand, Many Feared Dead in Myanmar

At least three people were confirmed dead in Thailand, where a high-rise building under construction collapsed in the heart of Bangkok, while many more are feared dead in Myanmar, where the full extent of damage remains unclear due to ongoing conflict and communication challenges.

The earthquake, which struck around 12:50 p.m. local time, had its epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. The tremors were felt far beyond Myanmar’s borders, including across Thailand and parts of southwestern China.

As of late Friday, the situation remains fluid, with rescue operations underway in both countries, though the scale of casualties is still being assessed. In Myanmar, a country suffering from years of conflict after a military coup in 2021, the earthquake has left communities scrambling for help.
