Hurricane Beryl roared across the island of Carriacou at 11 am local time Monday as a monster Category5 storm sporting wind speeds of 165 mph. The tropical weather maker was packing sustained winds of 150 mph when it pushed through the Caribbean, posing significant risks to lives and property. After making landfall in Carriacou, the storm tracked through the Windward Islands on Monday afternoon.
A hurricane warning remained in effect for Barbados, St. Vincent, Grenada, and Tobago. The storm picked up steam as it moved through the warm waters of the Caribbean on Monday afternoon. The current forecast models indicate that the storm will pose a severe risk to Grenada and the smaller islands that encompass the Grenadines and St. Vincent.
In addition to the hurricane warnings for parts of the region, tropical storm warnings were issued for Martinique, Trinidad, and St. Lucia. Meanwhile, a tropical storm watch was issued for parts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
The widespread impacts of Beryl's track have halted travel throughout the region. Airports in Barbados, Grenada, and Saint Lucia suspended operations on Sunday as the storm made its presence known. These airports are expected to open for business on Tuesday.
