Is Rain Water Dirty and What Causes It?

It seems like rain water should be pristine. Isn't it a bit like manna from heaven? While it may originate from a clean source, as rain water makes its way to the earth, it picks up all kinds of contaminants along the way, making it a bit of a tricky situation. 

The answer to, “Is rain water dirty?” is probably yes in the end. But, as with many things in science and nature, it’s not a clear-cut answer.
