A massive California snow storm has created numerous travel disruptions throughout the Sierra Nevada, including the closure of a major thoroughfare. How long can you expect these impacts to last? Read on for the latest details of the winter storm in California.

Major Interstate Shut Down as a Result of Monster California Snow Storm

Officials in California were forced to shut down 100 miles of Interstate 80 on Friday as a ferocious snow storm continued to unleash its fury across the Sierra Nevada. Forecasters are predicting that the region will pick up over 100 inches of snow in the hardest hit areas by the time that the snow lets up. Residents were told to stay off of the roads and take shelter as the blizzard howls.

The California Highway Patrol closed the highway after numerous spin-outs were triggered by the heavy snow, strong winds, and low visibility. There were dozens of accidents reported on this stretch of Interstate 80 to close out the week, resulting in motorists being stranded.

The current blizzard warning remained in effect for the Sierra Nevada through Sunday. Snow had been dropping at a rate of up to 4 inches per hour at times, pairing with winds clocking in at 60 to 75 mph.
