Last weekThe central and southern portions of the nation should be prepared for the threat of flash flooding on Wednesday and Thursday. Here is a closer look at this soggy forecast over the next few days.
Moisture-Rich Storm System Barreling Across the Southern and Central U.S.
Heavy rain is set to fall across a large part of the central and southern U.S. through at least Thursday, creating concerns of flash flooding. While disruptive, the rain will be welcome in this area of the country that has seen a largely dry fall thus far. Not only will the rain help to alleviate the growing drought conditions but it will also mitigate the increasing risk of wildfires.
However, too much moisture over a short period of time is never a good thing. What areas are most at risk of seeing flash flooding? Forecasters predict that the zone from Louisiana and into the panhandles of Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida will see the highest chance of flooding issues. This threat will expand to the northwestern corner of Georgia and up into parts of Tennessee and Kentucky.
Although not all of this zone will see the heavy rain, some communities could see rain come down at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, quickly overwhelming urban streets and small waterways.
