Meteorologists expect the weather in 2025 to shift from the record-breaking heat of 2023 and 2024. Experts tie this change primarily to the natural climate patterns of El Niño and La Niña.

El Niño, known for driving up global temperatures, has been a significant factor in recent extreme heat. However, with predictions that this phenomenon will subside in 2025, temperatures will also likely dip.

While climate change remains the underlying driver of rising global temperatures, the projected cooling in 2025 isn't a sign that the broader crisis is easing. Instead, it reflects the cyclical nature of these weather patterns, temporarily offsetting the effects of long-term warming.

The 2024-2025 U.S. Winter Outlook map for precipitation shows wetter-than-average conditions are most likely across the Great Lakes region of the U.S.. Drier-than-average conditions are forecast for parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast. | NOAA
