Earth Day 2024 is more than just a day off school or a reminder to plant a tree. Celebrated every year on April 22nd, this global movement marks the birth of the modern environmental movement, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the critical state of our planet and inspiring action to protect it.

Whether you're making Earth Day posters or taking extra care to recycle, understanding the importance of this day is crucial in a world facing unprecedented environmental challenges.

The Genesis of Earth Day

The story of Earth Day begins in the late 1960s, a period marked by growing concerns about environmental degradation. Images of polluted rivers, choking smog, and the devastating effects of pesticides like DDT sparked public outrage.

Senator Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin Democrat and avid environmentalist, witnessed these issues firsthand and envisioned a national day to galvanize public support for environmental protection.

Inspired by the anti-war protests sweeping the nation, Senator Nelson envisioned Earth Day as a large-scale "teach-in" focused on environmental issues. He enlisted the support of environmental activist Denis Hayes, and together they organized the first Earth Day on April 22nd, 1970.
