A major food crisis affects millions of Americans. If you've been to the grocery store lately, you may have noticed something alarming—empty shelves where eggs used to be. Costco and Trader Joe’s are now limiting egg purchases as a devastating avian flu outbreak cripples supply chains nationwide.

It's February 2025, and the egg shortage has reached a critical level. Over the past few months, consumers have seen a rapid increase in egg prices, with some states reporting costs as high as $10 per dozen. Families, restaurants, and food producers struggle to cope with this unprecedented crisis.

The main issue? Avian influenza has wiped out millions of egg-laying hens, forcing grocery stores to ration supplies. The situation has frustrated shoppers, businesses scrambling for alternatives, and industry experts warning that food inflation could extend well beyond eggs.

Soaring Egg Prices Leave Shoppers Scrambling

The numbers are staggering. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the price of a dozen large, Grade A eggs skyrocketed 65% in 2024, jumping from $2.52 to $4.15. And the situation is only expected to worsen—projections indicate a 20% increase this year as egg supplies struggle to recover.
