Approximately 300 miles off the coast of Cannon Beach in Oregon, there sits a volcano destined to erupt this year. How big of a threat may this be? What will happen when it does erupt?

Luckily, there is enough historical data scientists have collected from this underwater volcano that tell us what we should expect in 2025.

Signs Pointing to a 2025 Eruption

Researchers are predicting a possible eruption of Axial Seamount in 2025, based on patterns from previous eruptions. The volcano’s swelling, or inflation, suggests magma is accumulating beneath the surface, a key indicator of an impending eruption.

As magma builds up, the volcano inflates "like a balloon," with the inflation levels now approaching those seen just before the 2015 eruption. Rising magma pressure causes the mountain's surface to uplift, a clear sign of volcanic activity.
