Old Man Winter is reminding a large part of the northern U.S. that it is not done yet. Despite the calendar sliding into March, a number of wintry impacts are on the horizon in the coming week for this part of the country. Here is what you need to know about this developing winter weather maker.

March Winter Storm Anticipated Across Parts of Northern U.S.

A March winter storm is going to bring snow to a large portion of the central Rockies, the High Plains, the Upper Midwest, and the Great Lakes over the first week of the new month. The wintry impacts are part of the same system that is going to generate severe weather for the southern tier of the nation. This same storm will go on to present flooding concerns in the Northeast as the week progresses.

This multi-faceted storm system is also responsible for the soggy Sunday across California. The latest forecast models indicate that the system will track over the Intermountain West to start the new work week, ushering in rain to the lower elevations and snow for the mountains.

For example, Salt Lake City is forecast to see rain and snow showers on Monday transitioning to all snow overnight as the mercury dips into the mid 30s. The snow will linger through Tuesday morning before the temperatures climb into the mid 40s.

The storm will eject from the Rockies early in the week, translating to snow for the Denver metropolitan area. The Mile High City is forecast to see the chance of snow increase late Monday and into Tuesday. The most dramatic change will come in the form of temperatures. After seeing highs of about 70 degrees on Sunday, the mercury will top out in the mid 40s on Tuesday in Denver. A cold wind out of the north at 15 to 25 mph will amplify the chill in the air.

As is typical for winter storms that move through Denver, the western and southern suburbs will likely see the highest accumulations. Forecasters are warning that the storm will pack enough of a punch to cause widespread travel delays. Motorists will want to be aware of the possibility of slippery road conditions across parts of interstates 25, 70, and 80. Airline delays will be likely if airports need to undergo deicing operations.
