Estuaries are some of the most ecologically valuable and dynamic environments on Earth. These coastal habitats, where freshwater from rivers and streams meets and mixes with saltwater from the ocean, support a diverse range of plant and animal species. 

Beyond their natural beauty, estuaries play a critical role in sustaining marine life, protecting coastal communities, and mitigating climate change. Any change or decrease in the size of estuaries can be alarming and a signal of trouble for our environment. Below, we explore the many reasons why estuaries matter more than you might think.

Nurseries for Marine Life

Estuaries are critical for the growth and development of new spawns of marine life. Serving as protected waters, they provide excellent “nurseries” for the early stages of life. Salmon, herring, crabs, and oysters are examples and part of the 68 percent of the United States commercial fish catch that house themselves in an estuary habitat.
