When a tornado siren sounds, it’s not necessarily time to panic, but it is time to quickly shelter in place. By the time local authorities issue this signal, it usually means a tornado has already been spotted.

There’s no time to delay and preparedness is key. If you have a smart plan of action in place, the odds are in your favor. Together, let’s draft up a plan to ensure your safety.

Tornado Siren? Don't Panic

Let’s begin with a quick study of a tornado siren meaning. When you hear the siren sound, it’s a signal there’s an imminent threat. There are two types of warnings to be aware of:

  • Tornado Watch: This means that conditions are favorable for a tornado to form, but one hasn’t been spotted yet.

  • Tornado Warning: This means a tornado has been spotted or the radar has detected a rotation in the storm. When a warning is issued, immediate action is required.
