The biggest weekend in golf is here. But Mother Nature is already wreaking havoc as the golf community gathers in Augusta, Georgia, for the Masters Tournament. Here is a look at what you can expect for the weather in this corner of the country in the coming days.

First Day of Practice Halted at Masters Due to Weather

The weather is already presenting problems for the Masters, scheduled to officially tee off on Thursday, April 10, at Augusta National Golf Club. Monday's practice round was halted due to the weather. A line of storms pushing through the Southeast to start the week brought the threat of rain showers and thunderstorms to the region, getting the festivities off to a rocky start.

The frontal system impacted a large portion of the Savannah River Valley, including the town of Augusta. The serene community of Augusta is located about 135 miles to the southeast of Atlanta.

Event organizers were hopeful that the practice round would happen as scheduled, opening the gates at 8 am for spectators hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite golfers getting ready for the big event. Members of the media arriving at this time were instructed to shelter in place as storms approached the famous golf club.

The rain showers picked up, however, golf fans persisted with their plans and lined the course waiting for the players to arrive. Only a few golfers made it out in the rain to try to get in their practice round. By 11:30 am, the practice was suspended and spectators were asked to leave the course. The practice round never resumed as the weather threat persisted throughout the day. Event organizers said that tickets will be refunded.

Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, said that the practice was suspended due to safety concerns.
