What Is Global Warming and Can We Stop It?

4 hours agoGlobal warming is probably the most serious current environmental problem Earth is facing. It is a mega-process that alters weather conditions, creates major changes in ecosystems, and accumulates unprecedented challenges for human civilization and natural systems. Truly understanding global warming means understanding its impacts and finding effective solutions for future generations.
What is Global Warming?
Generally speaking, global warming is the rise in the surface temperature of the Earth due to, for the most part, human activities emitting gases into the atmosphere (1). Throughout the history of Earth, temperature has always fluctuated. However, the rapid rise in warming is very peculiar within the scope of the last few thousand years.
The greenhouse effect, in fact, is the major mechanism responsible for global warming. The Sun's rays do reach Earth and reflect back some of the energy back into space. However, the rest warm up land, water, and atmosphere. The heat partially trapped in the atmosphere by some heat-trapping greenhouse gases maintains the Earth at a temperature warm enough to support life. However, human activities have increased the concentration of these gases so much that it results in an increase in the greenhouse effect and, consequently, excessive warming.
