Have you ever heard people in oceanside communities discussing the dangers of red tide? If they’re showing signs of concern that it may be an ongoing issue, it’s important you heed any warnings about the local water. This is a very dangerous phenomenon that can not only damage the environment, but also impact your health.

What is Red Tide?

Red tide is a natural phenomenon that occurs in coastal waters when certain types of algae, particularly dinoflagellates, bloom in large amounts. This is what causes the water to take on a reddish, brownish tone.

While this phenomenon has been ongoing for centuries, its frequency and intensity are increasing. How long does red tide last? That’s the tricky part. Red tide blooms can last a matter of days, weeks, or even months. The main causes for concern are its impact on marine life, human health, and local economies.
