Forecasters are predicting that the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is setting up to be a real doozy. Here is what the long-range forecast models are predicting for the upcoming tropical weather season.

Slightly Above Tropical Weather Season in the Forecast

The Atlantic hurricane season officially kicks off on Sunday, June 1. Meteorologists are seeing early similarities between the upcoming stretch of months and what happened during the 2024 season. Nobody will soon forget the devastation caused by last year's season when Helene, Milton, and Beryl all impacted the U.S. with great ferocity.

Experts are currently predicting that the Atlantic basin will see between 13 and 18 named storms this year. The expected environmental conditions in the Atlantic will also promote the rapid intensification of storms again. This is similar to last year when abnormally warm ocean water temperatures fueled the development of major hurricanes.

Ocean water temperatures are already trending well over the historical average. Forecasters believe that this pattern will hold in the months ahead, priming the basin for explosive storms to take root and grow.

Ocean heat content (OHC) is expected to hover significantly over the average heading into the season. This reading measures both the temperature of the water and how deep the water plunges. An increasingly deep pool of warm water will provide a more supportive environment for tropical weather to grow when compared to warmth that is more shallow in nature.
