It is going to be a rough few days ahead for Florida as a slow-moving storm system moves across the peninsula through the weekend. Here is a look at this stormy forecast, likely to serve as an appetizer for a super-charged September.

Persistent Storms Take Aim at Florida Through the Weekend

The Sunshine State is not going to be as sunny as usual in the days ahead. While Florida is no stranger to summer storms, this latest stretch of weather will feature even a greater amount of activity. Heavy rain will accompany the strong storms throughout much of Florida thanks to a system churning over the Gulf of Mexico. The result will be a high chance of disruptions to outdoor plans.

Florida is accustomed to seeing a high amount of thunderstorm activity during the month of August. The central and southern areas of the state typically see the majority of the action, picking up between 6 and 10 inches of rain during the course of the month on average.

The current atmospheric pattern will favor both the frequency of storms roaming the state as well as the intensity. In addition to the approaching stormy weather, the region will also see an increase in humidity levels and temperatures. Forecasters are warning that the storms will be potent enough to usher in heavy rainfall capable of triggering flooding and powerful wind gusts.

The storm system will linger over the state due to the light steering winds. This slow movement will translate to significant amounts of rain. Rainfall rates may hit as high as 2 inches per hour. Rainfall of this magnitude will raise the concerns of flash flooding in urban centers and low-lying areas.

The inclement conditions will also support the development of waterspouts embedded with storm cells that come together near the coastal areas.
