US school students suffering heatwave health problems

2 months agoSince the days of one-room schoolhouses, children throughout the country have been leaving their homes to attend classes on a daily basis during the school year. While advanced technology, population sizes, state laws and many other things have changed over the years, some things have remained the same.
For example, students often get assigned homework. They also perform in concerts or plays to entertain their parents and other members of the community. One thing that hasn't remained the same, however, is climate, which may be having an adverse effect on students' health. In many school districts today, lack of air conditioning is taking its toll, especially during extreme heatwaves.
West Coast Students Suffering Serious Health Problems
An elementary school teacher in California recently spoke about serious health issues her Los Angeles students have been experiencing. The teacher stated that the air conditioning unit in her classroom does not work. She said the temperature on one particular day registered 94 degrees on the thermostat.
The students in the scorching hot classroom experienced severe headaches. Some of the children also suffered from nausea and nosebleeds. The teacher said the school had provided a portable cooling device to help alleviate heat in the classroom; however, the device was blowing hot air, so it did not work.
Kids in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia Had to Go Home Early
California school students are not the only ones who have been suffering health problems due to lack of air conditioning in their schools. Clear across the country, on the East Coast, numerous schools in Pennsylvania have sent students home early because of heatwaves that were causing dangerous temperatures in their classrooms.
