Last monthAs last week's major snow event in Colorado and New Mexico demonstrated, winter weather is right around the corner for most Americans. It is easy to be prepared when major events such as blizzards hit your community. What many people discount are the sneaky weather dangers that can develop during the winter months as they pale in comparison to the blockbuster storms. Here are a few of the most common hazardous winter weather elements that can catch you off guard.
Light Snow
Snow does not have to be measured in feet to present danger. Even a light accumulation can cause problems on the roads. Snow-related traffic accidents happen when the snow is light enough to not even prompt a winter weather advisory out of the National Weather Service (NWS). During times of heavy snow, there are far fewer motorists on the road. However, snow that is not enough to bring life to a halt is responsible for more accidents by volume. Light snow is particularly dangerous when it first begins to fall if roads have not been treated.
