The Ancient Weather Forecasting Methods That Still Hold Up Today

Long before satellites and supercomputers, ancient civilizations devised remarkably accurate weather forecasting methods. While we can laugh at some old-fashioned weather proverbs, most traditional forecasting methods were founded on centuries of careful observation and still hold up quite well today (1).

The Sky Tells Stories

That ancient rhyme "red sky at night, sailors' delight; red sky in morning, sailors take warning" isn't poetry - it's science. This method, mentioned even in the Bible, works particularly well in parts of the world where weather patterns tend to travel from west to east. The colors are the result of sunlight reacting with water vapor and dust particles in the air, typically indicating approaching or departing weather systems (2).
