Power Outages Combine with Surging Heat in Texas to Create Dangerous Situation
Officials in Texas are telling residents that it could be days before power is restored. As of Wednesday afternoon, there are still over 1.6 million customers in the dark with 1.3 million of these in the Houston area. Local provider CenterPoint Energy said that the initial assessments of the damage indicate that it will be some time before power is completely restored to the region.
This is not good news as dangerous heat envelopes Texas in the wake of the storm. Real feel temperatures are forecast to climb into the triple digits across Houston and Galveston. No power means no air conditioning, making it a precarious situation as the heat and humidity tick up throughout the week.
CenterPoint Energy supplies the power to the bulk of Houston and down into Galveston. The company said that 250 poles were brought down by high winds on one circuit in Galveston, triggering mass power outages. The provider is hoping to restore power to about one million customers by the end of day Wednesday.
CenterPoint is working to deploy mobile generation units in order to deliver temporary power to hospitals, cooling centers, senior centers, and other critical areas.
