Storms Could Mar Outdoor Plans in South-Central U.S. This Weekend
Alexis Thornton
6 months agoThe break from the persistent moisture was nice while it lasted. The southern Plains and the Mississippi Valley are now preparing for a return of the severe weather and heavy rain that marked the start of the month. Several rounds of storms are forecast to impact the region through the weekend. Here is a more detailed look at what you can expect for the timing and intensity of these storms.
South-Central U.S. Forecast to be in Crosshairs of Weekend Storms
The south-central U.S. is back under the gun for storms packing strong winds, large hail, and rain that triggers flash flooding. The activity will get started again on Friday and is expected to linger through at least Sunday. The zone from Colorado and into Mississippi will be in the primary impact zone of these storms that forecasters are warning could turn severe at times.
The unsettled weather will be the result of two separate disturbances that are expected to move to the southeast along the edge of the heat dome that is currently parked over the western states. Both disturbances will push across the central Plains states and into the lower portion of the Mississippi Valley in the coming days.
The initial round of severe weather will ignite on Friday evening in an area from Colorado and up into Nebraska, eventually spreading into Kansas and Oklahoma and down into the Texas Panhandle. Meteorologists are warning that some of these storm cells will feature the elements needed to support tornadic development. Other potential impacts include large hail and winds hitting speeds of up to 65 mph.
