The nation's heartland is going to be at risk of another surge of severe weather in the coming week. It has been a largely quiet few days for the central U.S., however, this lull is about to be erased as an active weather pattern sets up over the region. Here is what you need to know about the forecast as the calendar flips from July to August

Stormy Conditions in the Cards for the Central U.S. to Start the Week

Forecasters are warning that potentially dangerous complexes of storms are going to roam a large area of the country from the northern Plains and into the Midwest next week. The region got a taste of what is to come with sporadic storm activity on Saturday and Sunday. However, Mother Nature is just getting started with this return to a stormy weather pattern.

The uptick in storms will be the result of a heat dome that is shifting from the western portions of the country and into the southern and central Plains states. The movement of the core of the heat will translate to a renewed chance of storms for the ridge of the dome in the Midwest and beyond.

Meteorologists said that the weather pattern heading into next week will pack similar ingredients to what was seen on July 15 in the Midwest. These ingredients fueled the development of a derecho that tore through parts of Iowa and northern Illinois.

The storm complexes will begin to march across parts of the Midwest on Monday, bringing the chance of severe weather in a number of major cities. These complexes will deliver the shot of strong winds, heavy rain, and the risk of flash flooding.

Diving Into a Few Specific City Forecasts

Looking at a few individual forecasts, Minneapolis could see a rocky Monday morning commute with scattered thunderstorms. Conditions should improve for the evening commute across the Twin Cities. Highs will top out in the upper 80s with overnight readings slipping into the upper 60s.

The weather maker will push into the Chicago area throughout the day, keeping the metro area under the persistent threat of rain and storms. The chance of severe weather will linger into the evening hours before finally clearing out overnight. The Windy City is forecast to see a high of about 82 degrees with lows landing at the 70-degree mark.

It will be a steamy Monday for St. Louis. High humidity levels will partner with temperatures in the mid 90s. This humidity will lay the groundwork for scattered thunderstorms early in the day. Temperatures will remain warm overnight with a forecast low of just 77 degrees.
