Storms Back in the Forecast for Southern Plains, Lower Mississippi Valley, and Southeast

Unlike the severe weather earlier in the week, Thursday's threats are not likely to include a good chance of tornadoes. This is because the jet stream will be circulating in an area farther to the north across cooler air and away from the center of the storm's energy.

However, forecasters said that you cannot completely rule out the chance of an isolated tornado.

All it takes is one twister to strike a populated area to cause significant damage, making it important to be aware of the risks.

The presence of straight-line winds could also present potential dangers. Winds of this nature have the power to bring down trees, create widespread power outages, and cause damage to roofs and other pieces of property.

These downbursts are triggered by strong currents of air that rush quickly to the ground within storm cells, quickly spreading out and expanding across the impacted area.

Cities Bracing for Thursday's Storm

It could be a long day for a number of cities as Thursday's storm rolls in. While the day will start calm in Dallas, storms will fire up in the latter part of the day across the metroplex.

Winds will be out of the south at 10 to 15 mph with the temperatures climbing into the mid 80s for a high. The chance of storms packing strong winds and hail will stick around through the evening hours before a calmer period settles in for Friday.

Memphis will see a similar weather situation with storms igniting during the peak afternoon heating hours. Highs will reach the mid 80s before slipping into the upper 50s when the sun goes down.

The risk of storms will push to the north throughout the day, enveloping cities such as St. Louis.

The Arch City is forecast to see storms erupt in the afternoon and evening hours as the mercury inches up to an unseasonably warm high of 84 degrees.

The leading edge of the cold front will arrive overnight, sending the temperatures down into the upper 40s for lows.

It will be noticeably cooler on Friday with a forecast high of just 63 degrees. The temperatures in the 60s will linger through the weekend in this part of the nation.

Friday's Chances of Storms Focuses on the Southeast

The storms are expected to weaken as they move into the Tennessee Valley during the evening and overnight hours. However, the storms may fire up again on Friday across the Southeast as the responsible weather front merges with the heat over this part of the country.

The current forecast is calling for storms to generate over central Alabama and into northern Georgia and the Carolinas.

You can expect these storms to rumble beginning Friday afternoon. Heavy rain is a good possibility with some of these storms but the risks of hail and destructive winds will be more localized.

The front is also expected to stall out over the southern Plains and the Southeast this weekend. This will translate to a lingering risk of rain showers and thunderstorms throughout the weekend weather forecast.

Those using the Interstate 20 corridor across this region in the coming days will want to be aware of the risk of flash flooding.

Looking at a few specific cities, Atlanta is predicted to wake up to scattered rain showers with thunderstorms developing in the afternoon hours.

Some storms may be packing gusty winds. Highs will bounce around in the mid 80s before dropping into the mid 60s overnight.

A nearly identical forecast will impact areas such as Greenville, South Carolina and Birmingham, Alabama. The wet conditions will linger into the weekend, potentially putting some outdoor plans in jeopardy.

The risk of storms will likely hold off until the weekend for Jackson, Mississippi. While a stray rain shower or storm may sneak into the area late Friday, Saturday will see a higher chance of scattered storms.

The moisture machine will really get going overnight with a half of an inch of rain on tap and another quarter of an inch expected on Sunday to wrap up the event.

Highs will fall from the low 80s on Friday to the low 70s on Saturday and then the low 60s on Sunday thanks to the arrival and entrenchment of the cold front.
