Southern Mexico Coast Prepares for Arrival of Hurricane John on Tuesday

While the U.S. Gulf Coast is preparing for a likely landfall by a hurricane by the end of the week, Mexico braced for its own impending tropical weather event. Here is the latest on Hurricane John and its expected impacts in Mexico.

Hurricane John Makes Landfall in Mexico

Forecasters warned those in southern Mexico to be ready for substantial rain and high winds as Hurricane John bears down on the region. The slow-moving storm struke Monday night as a major category 3 storm, as authorities warned residents to protect themselves against potentially deadly storm surges and heavy rain.

The storm packed maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (193 kph) and made landfall south-southwest of Marquelia in the state of Guerrero, at about 9:15 p.m. CST, accoding to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).
