It has been a chaotic few days of weather for the Rocky Mountains and portions of the Plains states. This continuous clash of weather will continue in the days ahead.

Here is a look at what has been happening across this part of the U.S. and what you can expect heading into the new week.

Snow Changes to Rain as it Moves East

Winter came early for some areas of the Rockies and to the south on Friday night. The first snowflakes of the season fell as far south as the mountains of Arizona after slamming the Rockies with significant accumulation. For instance, Flagstaff, Arizona picked up a few inches of snow late Friday and into Saturday.

This snow changed to rain as it tracked down into the lower terrains and across the Plains. The clash of the cooler temperatures with the warm readings in place also raised the threat of thunderstorms for this region.

The system crawled to the northeast at a slow speed on Saturday and into Sunday as the result of its distance from the jet stream. This movement sent the snow into parts of Utah and Colorado at times, giving the ski resorts a welcome surge of accumulation.
