Should We Be Scared If an Asteroid Is Heading Towards Earth?

2 months agoThe idea of an asteroid hurtling towards the Earth has long been a fixture of science fiction novels. While it’s unlikely we’ll ever have a Tom Cruise scenario calling for the end of the world, there are certain risks that come with an asteroid hitting the Earth. Together, let’s explore the reality of such an event.
Is An Asteroid Heading Towards Earth?
In 2004, NASA made a huge discovery. They found an asteroid named Apophis – nearly 1,100 feet in diameter – orbiting uncomfortably close to the Earth. At the time, scientists estimated it could sail even closer to the Earth as soon as 2029.
In 2021, however, they were able to launch a radar observation campaign to rule that estimation out. Now, they believe there’s no imminent danger. The earliest they believe this near-Earth asteroid could strike the planet is 100 years from now.
It’s scary stuff when you consider the theory that an asteroid struck the planet 66 million years ago, killing all the dinosaurs.
