A large zone from the Midwest and into the Northeast will be under the threat of severe storms this week as the temperatures also heat up. Read on for more information about what you should expect this week for storm activity.

Storms Will Move to the East

Storms that fire up in the Midwest early in the week will eventually creep to the east by the middle of the week, bringing some of the nation's most populated cities into the fold.

The weekend got off to a wild start for portions of South Dakota as a wind storm whipped through the region. A secondary event with high winds also impacted Minnesota and into western Wisconsin. Chicago also got in on some of this gusty storm action on Sunday morning as thunderstorms packing high winds rattled the Windy City to start the day. Yet another round of storms got going later in the day on Sunday across the Dakotas and across into the Upper Midwest.

Will Sunday's stormy conditions linger into the start of the week? Forecasters are warning that the Midwest will see the threat of storms into Monday as a cold front will push through the region and lay the groundwork for unsettled conditions. Minnesota and Wisconsin will experience the third consecutive day of potential severe weather as the new work week kicks off.

This will translate to a likely rocky morning commute for Minneapolis. The Twin Cities is forecast to see storms early in the day with winds out of the west-southwest at 10 to 15 mph. Highs will top out in the mid 80s with lows of about 63 degrees.

More storms will ignite during the afternoon hours as the temperatures climb. Once again, Chicago will need to be aware of storms moving in during the afternoon hours. Detroit will have a higher chance of storms after the sun goes down. These storm cells will pack the usual hazards of strong winds, hail, heavy rain at times, and isolated tornadic activity.

Storm Forecast for the Northeast

It was a relatively quiet weekend for the Northeast. While the stretch of days was not completely dry, only spotty storms were recorded in this part of the country. This will change on Monday as a more widespread line of storms tracks into the region and finds an abundance of heat and humidity to fuel further development. The leftover energy that prompted Sunday's storms across the Ohio Valley will meet up with the heat and humidity already in place in the Northeast to raise the risk of severe weather.

Gusty winds and torrential rain will be the biggest impacts of Monday's storms in the Northeast. The current forecast is predicting that the coastal areas of the Northeast will likely dodge the strongest storms. This means that the suburbs located to the west of the major metropolitan areas of the Interstate 95 corridor will see the greatest risk when compared to the communities on the coastal side of these cities.
