A new storm system is going to move along at a fast clip beginning Wednesday, bringing a mix of snow, ice, and rain to much of the northern U.S. Read on for more details about this impending weather event.

Second of Three Storms Bearing Down on Northern U.S. Through Thursday

It has been a week of unsettled weather for the northern tier of the country as a train of storms pushes through the region. The second of the three storms expected this week will track along the border of U.S. and Canada late Wednesday and through Thursday. The good news for those tired of the winter weather is that there is not a lot of cold air for this system to draw upon, meaning most of the U.S. will see the moisture fall as rain rather than snow or ice.

Some communities in this region woke up to areas of patchy fog on Wednesday, slowing down travel across parts of Interstates 80 and 90 throughout portions of the Midwest and the Northeast. Fog tends to form this time of the year when milder air circulates over the ground that is still covered with ice or snow.

A number of large urban centers will see bursts of periodic rain through Thursday out of this system. The rain will first fire up in places such as Chicago and Cincinnati before moving to the east and into Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. Colder air in place in and around Detroit may translate to some wet snow working into the rain.

For instance, New York City will start the day Thursday with scattered rain showers. Temperatures will remain relatively pleasant for the winter with highs near 50 degrees. It is shaping up to be a bit wetter to the north in Boston with more persistent rain showers. Like its neighbor to the south, Boston will also see the mercury hover near the 50-degree mark. Colder temperatures in communities such as Burlington, Vermont will mean that the precipitation forms as snow in the morning hours before transitioning to all rain in the latter part of the day.
