Last monthWinter can be an amazing time of the year. Not only do Christmas and New Year's add festive elements to the colder weather near the start of this season, but winter sport lovers especially love getting out into the snow and traversing through it one way or another. However, there are also risk factors that you should take note of this winter to ensure that it is as safe a possible for you.
Shoveling snow
Shoveling snow is an activity that anybody who lives in a climate with regular snowfall every winter knows well. However, it is important to always keep in mind its dangers, even if it is something that you have done throughout your life. Of course, those who are not used to it, whether due to a rare snowstorm having fallen in the area or having recently moved to a colder climate, need to be especially careful.
All of that is because shoveling snow is a more strenuous activity than many may realize at the time, and it can be especially jarring to the body if you are not in better physical shape. That said, even those who are in good physical condition can suffer as the result of a snow-shoveling experience.
One of the reasons why it is dangerous, in addition to the physical exertion and resulting increased heart rate, is all of the cold air that is being breathed in, which results in constricted arteries. Of course, this occurs regardless of what you are doing outside, but it combined with physical exertion can be especially dangerous.
When you shovel snow, make sure to take regular breaks, both for physical reasons as well as to get yourself out of the cold. Doing so is essential if the job is especially intense - i.e. after a heavy snowfall.
