As the holiday season approaches, many of us look forward to adorning our homes with twinkling lights and festive decorations. While holiday lights can add magic and warmth, it’s important to take some precautions to keep your home (and loved ones) safe.

From tangled cords to overloaded outlets, there are a few things to consider as you start decorating. Together, let’s review a few tips to keep your holiday celebrations merry, bright, and – most importantly – safe.

Holiday Lights Safety

Before you hang a single strand, take a few minutes to inspect your lights – especially if you’re reusing lights from last year. Here’s what to look for:

  • Frayed Wires: Over time, wires can wear down, increasing the risk of electrical fires. If you see any frayed, exposed, or cracked wires, toss the strand and buy new lights.

  • Broken Bulbs: A broken bulb or two might seem harmless, but they can actually lead to short circuits or electrical sparks. Replace any broken bulbs with the same wattage as the others in the strand.

  • Old Technology: If your lights are very old, consider upgrading to new LED strands. They’re safer, use less electricity, and stay cool to the touch, reducing the chance of overheating.
