Ongoing El Niño Winter Bringing Mixed Impacts for Missouri Agriculture and Finances

Alexis Thornton

Last year

Folks in Missouri are scratching their heads about what to expect this winter. Turns out it's shaping up to be a real mixed bag because of El Niño. I'm sure you've heard that term before - it's when the ocean gets way warmer than normal off the coast of Peru.

Scientists say we're in a strong El Niño year. That means the weather here will get pretty weird and have good and bad impacts.

On the farming side, things will get tricky. The ongoing drought doesn't mix well with too much rain or snow, which happens often in El Niño winters. At the same time, warmer temps could help some crops and livestock. As for regular people, our bank accounts might take a hit from unusual heating or electricity usage. Expenses could swing both ways.

So for Missouri's economy and agriculture, it looks like a real Jekyll and Hyde winter is in store. We better buckle up and get ready to deal with the crazy mood swings of Mother Nature.

The details still aren't clear, but extremes seem likely. While challenges are ahead, hopefully some perks too. Stay tuned and flexible, Missouri!
