Northeast Remains Vigilant as Snow Persists in the Region

It has been a slippery few days across some parts of the Northeast thanks to a series of quick-hitting winter storms. Forecasters are cautioning that another round of wintry precipitation is on the way. Here is what you need to know about how the forecast is shaping up for the next few days in this region.

Slippery Road Conditions Will Persist in Parts of the Northeast Through Wednesday

Travelers will want to remain on guard in the Northeast and beyond as additional waves of snow and the possibility of dangerous squalls persist. The threat of hazardous road conditions at the hands of the winter weather will linger through at least Wednesday, following on the heels of two storms that got their start in Canada before sweeping through the northern U.S. Yet one more storm is forecast to track over the Northwest late Tuesday and through Wednesday.

First up will be a zone of snow that fires up across northern New York state before moving into New England. Snow accumulations of about 1 to 3 inches are on tap with this burst of precipitation.

The risk of snow squalls will continue to be a problem in the same area stretching from Pennsylvania to Maine that saw these squalls erupt late Monday. The sunshine to start the day Tuesday may be deceiving as the weather is likely to deteriorate quickly. Motorists using parts of interstates 80, 81, and 90 in this zone will want to be cognizant of the chance of sudden reductions in visibility if the squalls develop.

The evening communities in cities such as Pittsburgh and Syracuse may also prove to be a slippery affair on Tuesday due to the timing of the snow. Erie, Pennsylvania is another community that will continue to see light snow showers through the day Tuesday and well into Wednesday.

Wednesday's Forecast for the Northeast

Heading into Wednesday, the mercury will increase up into the 40s and 50s across the Interstate 95 corridor stretching from Boston and down into Philadelphia. This means that any moisture that creeps this far east will likely fall as rain or a rain and snow mix. However, there is a chance that a heavy surge in moisture at one time could result in a short period of all snow. The silver lining is that the warmer temperatures will likely mitigate the threat of icy road conditions in these populated metro areas.

A rapid freeze-up is possible in portions of Pennsylvania and New York. The temperatures are predicted to inch up above the freezing mark during the day Wednesday. This means that any snow from Tuesday will begin to melt. However, falling temperatures on Wednesday evening will support the freezing of this water into the overnight hours, creating slick roadways and sidewalks.

Breezy conditions will also work to blow away some of the standing water on sidewalks and roads, helping to prevent widespread freeze-up concerns. The real feel readings coming at the hands of the wind will land well below freezing in upstate New York and New England into the early morning hours Thursday.

The Northeast will enjoy a brief reprieve from the threat of winter weather on Thursday and into Friday. However, another storm is looming on the horizon. This cross-country is already menacing parts of the Southwest on its way to the southern Plains, the Midwest, the Great Lakes, and eventually into the Northeast. We will continue to update the progress of this weather maker in the coming days.
