Tropical Storm Debby Turning to the North, Setting Sights on Interior Northeast

Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are predicting that Tropical Storm Debby will make a turn to the north after coming on shore in South Carolina on Thursday, making its way up into the Northeast. This movement will result in heavy rain for a large portion of the northeastern U.S. and western New England. The amount of expected rainfall will be capable of triggering widespread flooding.

The storm spent most of the day Wednesday just off the coast of the southeastern U.S., picking up more moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and refueling for its next landfall. Previously, Debby came on shore early Monday as a Category 1 hurricane in the Big Bend region of Florida. At least five deaths have been blamed on Debby's impacts.

In addition to the heavy rain associated with Debby, the feature will also produce gusty winds across into the interior Northeast. Severe thunderstorms could also generate tornadic activity in the coastal areas.

After tracking inland on Thursday, Debby will curve to the north and travel along the Appalachians and into the Northeast on Friday and Saturday. The storm will weaken when it chugs across land, devolving into a tropical rainstorm.
