At least nine people were killed after high winds brought down a stage at a campaign event in Mexico while more than 50 people are dead at the hands of flooding in Afghanistan. Here is a look at some of the top global weather headlines this week, including news closer to home.
Nine People Killed in Mexico as the Result of High Winds
Powerful winds whipped through the northwestern corner of Mexico on Wednesday, collapsing a stage and killing nine people. In addition to the nine confirmed fatalities, the tragedy also injured about 50 more people. One of the fatalities was a child.
The incident happened in San Pedro Garza Garcia, a suburb of Monterrey. Nuevo León state Gov. Samuel Garcia said that emergency workers were still onsite combing through the wreckage of the collapsed stage looking for potential victims early Thursday. Garcia said that he visited three local hospitals, confirming that three of the injured victims were undergoing surgery at the time and the rest were listed in stable condition.
