Whether you’re at home or traveling throughout the nation, most people wonder if they should drink from their water faucet. That’s a perfectly reasonable question because drinking dirty water presents a host of dangers to your health.

Generally speaking, is sink water safe to drink? We won’t give you one of those “it depends” kinds of answers. The answer is probably yes, but we’ll break it all down for you below.

Drinking From Your Water Faucet

According to the CDC, the United States is renowned for having one of the safest, most reliable drinking water sources in the world. Typically, the water that comes out of the shower and kitchen faucet comes from surface water or groundwater sources.

Surface sources include lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and streams. Groundwater comes from aquifers and other underground spaces in pores and spaces within rocks. Groundwater becomes accessible after drilling wells and pumping the water to the surface.
