Alexis Thornton
Last monthSeveral blasts of chilly air this week will result in the first chances of widespread frost for the Great Lakes and the interior Northeast. Here is a look at this cool forecast.
First Frost of the Season Forecast for the Interior Northeast
The first frost of the season is happening right on schedule. The historical average date for the first widespread frost of the season lands between late September and early October for the zone from the Upper Midwest and down into the central Appalachians. Most of New England also typically sees the first frost of the season during this time frame.
Because of the timing coming in within normal ranges, most agricultural interests will be ready to handle the chill. However, home gardeners will want to take special care to guard sensitive vegetation as the mercury drops.
A large area of high pressure accompanied by a mass of cool air will continue to push to the southeast through Thursday. The resulting impacts will be thin wispy clouds at night that allow the temperatures to plummet. A lack of wind will elevate the risk of frost across the Great Lakes and over into the interior Northeast on both Wednesday and Thursday nights.
