Hurricane Helene Disrupts Flights Across the Southeast

3 months agoHurricane Helene is already causing significant disruptions to flight operations in the southeastern United States, with Tampa International Airport experiencing the most significant impact. As of 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, there were approximately 1,020 flight cancellations nationwide, far exceeding the daily average for 2023.
Southwest Airlines has been hit particularly hard by the storm, with at least 200 flight cancellations reported as of 10:30 a.m. ET. The airline, which operates the most Florida flights of any carrier, has suspended service at Tampa International Airport and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.
Other airports in the region, including Sarasota-Bradenton International and Southwest Florida International, have also seen significant cancellations.
In an effort to minimize disruptions, airlines are canceling flights ahead of the storm to avoid stranding passengers at airports. Southwest Airlines has announced that it is waiving change fees for flights to, from, or through airports as far south as Miami and as far north as Charlotte and Nashville.
The airline hopes to resume service at Tampa International Airport and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport as early as Friday morning, but the situation remains fluid and subject to change. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on their flights and to be prepared for potential delays or cancellations.
