There’s a short answer to this question: very. In fact, according to the California Air Resource Board, people should avoid outdoor activity when wildfire smoke is present.

There are a few stipulations, however, such as the amount of time you spend outside, your level of exertion, the level of air pollution, and possible existing health conditions. Still, if you can avoid prolonged exposure, that's your safest bet.

Wildfire Smoke Dangers

It cannot be overstated: wildfire smoke poses serious risks to your health. The smoke from any fire releases particles and chemicals into the air. And all smoke contains carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter (PM) – also known as soot.

Smoke may also contain other chemicals, like aldehydes, acid gases, and nitrogen oxides. Inhaling carbon monoxide, for example, decreases the body's oxygen supply and causes headaches. Beyond that, there are many other health concerns to be aware of, especially if you see black smoke. Here are some of the most potent ones.
